This installation, curated by Becka Viau for the group show "Sovereignty" at the Anna Leonowens Gallery in Halifax, NS, explores the concept of sovereignty through the lens of the human body. Sovereignty is typically defined as supreme authority, particularly the authority of a state to govern itself or another state. In this exhibition, I chose to interpret this idea in a more intimate and personal context.
The installation is situated in the hallway leading to Gallery 3, where the remainder of the exhibition is displayed. Chain-link fencing has been bolted against both walls, with barbed wire strung along the top. On both sides of the fence, 30 lbs. of human hair are stuffed between the fence and the wall, while at the entry and exit points of the hallway, plastic sheeting hangs from the ceiling to the floor. Strong fluorescent lights illuminate the space, casting harsh shadows and enhancing the stark atmosphere. A lone broom and dustpan, accompanied by a dust mask, lean against the fence.
This work challenges the audience to consider the complexities of personal autonomy, identity, and the often-overlooked struggles for self-governance within the body and society.
