Mandaee Bazaar

Collaboration with Ariel Nasr

Public site-specific video installation
Dimensions: 45 ft. x 9 ft.
Completed: October 2010

For this project, I collaborated with Ariel Nasr, an Afghan-Canadian filmmaker and friend, who was born in Halifax and is currently based in Kabul, Afghanistan. Together, we created a large-scale video projection installation in downtown Halifax.

We seamlessly grafted video footage of a bustling market square in Kabul—captured at a one-to-one scale by Ariel—onto the windows of a now-defunct business site in downtown Halifax. This installation was displayed for a period of two weeks. For casual passersby, whether walking or driving by at night, it appeared as if they were peering through a portal into the vibrant, crowded, and dusty streets of Kabul. The footage played on a ten-minute loop, immersing viewers in the sights and sounds of a distant culture, inviting them to experience everyday life from another part of the world.
